What is a Circular Polarizer (CPL) Filter?
- A Circular Polarizer (CPL) filter combines a linear polarizer with a quarter-wave retarder, with the retarder’s fast axis oriented at 45° relative to the linear polarizer’s transmission axis. It works as a camera filter that screws onto the front of a lens. Its primary function is to reduce glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces, such as water and glass, deepen the blue of the sky, and increase color saturation in your photos.
- However, due to the relatively thin thickness of the polarizer, it is usually used in combination with two ordinary optical glass plates or a filter coated with an anti-reflection (AR) layer, the CPL polarizing filter is sandwiched in the middle.
